New SABTO Consent Guidelines Published

The Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs (SaBTO) has released updated guidelines on patient consent for blood transfusion. These guidelines, approved in June 2025, replace the 2020 edition and strengthen requirements for informed consent and shared decision-making.

Key updates include:

  • A new chapter on consent for children and neonates.
  • Updated references and examples of best practice.
  • Clear processes for providing information and documenting consent.

The guidelines aim to ensure patients receive comprehensive information about transfusion risks, benefits, and alternatives, supporting informed choices in all care settings.
